INTRODUCTION

At the end of the service you’ll be hearing more details about a couple of new Wednesday night studies we’re offering. Dr. David Downey will teach a rich, verse-by-verse study in Ephesians. Karen Sanders, Chad Brantley and I will be leading a video driven series on Sacred Parenting by Gary Thomas. This is one of the most biblical and practical approaches to parenting I’ve ever seen. There’s support with our Family Dinner and full age-graded programming for children on Wednesday nights. I encourage you take advantage of these opportunities for growth.

Open your Bibles to John 9. The most intense concentration of miraculous, supernatural activity in the history of the world came in the three years of Jesus’ public ministry. It marked the entrance of the Kingdom of God in the person of the Messiah Jesus Christ. The Gospel of John records seven of these miracles that are called “miraculous signs” because they point to who Jesus is and what He came to do. The miracle we’re looking at today takes up all of John 9, and rather than my reading the text this morning I want you to hear it from a scene from the movie “The Gospel of John,” that depicts John 9:1-12. INTRODUCTION

Open your Bibles this morning to John 6:16. There are seven of Jesus’ miracles that John records in his Gospel account. John includes these miracles because he wants to drive home a point. They are called “miraculous signs” because they point to something … the power of Jesus which is unleashed when we believe. So we come to the fifth of these miracles here in John 6:16-21. Follow along as I read.

PHOTO – ILLUSTRATION – Some of you may remember from several years ago a movie entitled “The Perfect Storm.” It’s based on the true story of a massive storm that hit off the coast of New England. The storm was actually a convergence of at least two storms that created a powerful force of nature that did incredible damage and sank several fishing boats at sea. One of those boats was the Andrea Gail, a fishing boat with six men on board who all perished in the storm. It was a riveting story and since then the phrase “perfect storm” has become part of our vocabulary. A “perfect storm” is a situation that is made worse by a rare combination of different circumstances. It’s like getting a call that your child has broken their arm at school, and when you go out to get your car you have a flat tire. (more…)

INTRODUCTION

Let’s open our Bibles to John 6:5. As you’re turning I want to encourage you to be part of our Leadership Summit this evening. If you serve in any capacity in our SMBS ministry this is vital equipping for you. We also have need for people who will volunteer to help teach our boys and girls in preschool and children’s SMBS. You can come this evening and find out more about how you can get involved. The details are in your worship guide today.

This summer we’re studying some of the miracles of Jesus and the one we’re looking at today may be the most familiar of all of Jesus’ miracles … the Feeding of the Five Thousand. It’s found in all four of the Gospels, so it’s a big deal. Read John 6:5-15. (more…)

INTRODUCTION

Take out your copy of the Scriptures. If you don’t have one we have them available as you walk in or in the pew rack. Read John 5:1-9. Pray.

ILLUSTRATION – In Bethesda, Maryland is one of the most important hospitals in the US … Bethesda Naval Hospital, otherwise known as Walter Reed Medical Center. It’s one of the most prominent hospitals in the US because when our nation’s presidents are in need of surgery they most often are admitted to Bethesda Naval Hospital. It is to this hospital that many of our military men and women who are wounded in combat are brought for treatment of the trauma of battle. And during those times of war the President of the US will often visit the wards in Bethesda where the soldiers are being treated. (more…)

INTRODUCTION

We don’t live very long before we realize that in life we constantly bump up against things that we cannot fix or change no matter how hard we try … an illness we can’t seem to get over … a son or daughter who has chosen a lifestyle that breaks our heart … a sin that keeps tripping us up over and over … a financial hole we can’t seem to get out of … you know what I mean. It is into this broken world that Jesus came, and He reveals Himself at the intersection of our weakness and His power. (more…)
