INTRODUCTION

Before I get started this morning I want to remind you that this series on heaven is taking us through Easter. We have a great Easter planned as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord. Additionally we have a guest with us that day with a testimony of the power of the Cross and the resurrection. Brooks Douglass is a former state senator in Oklahoma who has produced a feature-length film entitled “Heaven’s Rain.” It’s the story of the tragic murder of his parents and the power Christ gave him to forgive those who hurt his family. Please bring friends and family with you. It’s a life-changing message. (more…)

INTRODUCTION

ILLUSTRATION – When I was a ten-year-old boy my dad was notified that we were being transferred to England to live for three years. At that point in my life I had hardly ever been outside the state of Texas, much less outside the US and across a vast ocean. I was a bit nervous about the fact that I had never flown on an airplane, and that was to be the way we would travel to our new home. So my mom took my sister and me to the library where we checked out books on Great Britain. My sister and I sat in the floor and looked at pictures of the place where we were going to live for the next three years. I read about the different customs of the British people, and I looked at photos of the historic places that I thought I would never see with my own eyes. So the day came and I got on the plane and flew across the Atlantic Ocean to a country I’d never been to before.

Well one day we as believers will die and we’ll make a tremendous journey to fantastic place called heaven. And God’s Word tells us all we need to know about the place we are going and how we’ll get there. So why wouldn’t we want to do learn everything we could learn about that place where we will spend, not three years, not three decades, but eternity? (more…)

March 16, 2013 “A Vision for the Nations”

Sunday, March 16th, 2014

ILLUSTRATION – Fifty years ago last week an event occurred in New York City that most of us never knew happened, and yet if affects our lives today. On March 13, 1964 Kitty Genovese got off work at about 3am, drove home, parked her car and walked toward her apartment door. Immediately she was met by a suspicious man. She turned to run, but the attacker caught up with her and stabbed her. Kitty screamed for help, and one neighbor heard her and yelled for the attacker to stop. He stopped the attack momentarily, but then returned to attack a second and third time. It wasn’t until about a half-hour later that the police were finally called. As it turned out 37 people witnessed the murder of Kitty Genovese and didn’t call the police. The event shocked New York City. The question was asked, “What’s wrong with our city that 37 people could watch a murder and not do something to stop it?” The attack, and the investigation after it, caused psychologists and sociologists to coin a phrase called the “Genovese Syndrome,” a term that describes the phenomenon that people are less likely to take responsibility for an action or inaction when others are present. The theory is that people assume that someone else is responsible for taking action, or that someone else has already done so. (more…)

INTRODUCTION

Before I get started this morning I want to tell you about a new sermon series that I will begin two weeks from today and that will climax with our Easter celebration. The new series is entitled “Heaven … Really?” There’s a new movie coming out in a few weeks called “Is Heaven for Real?” and it’s about a little boy who supposedly died and went to heaven. He came back and told his parents the things that he saw. People are obviously very interested in heaven, and the thankfully God’s Word tells us everything we need to know about heaven … more than any human can ever tell us. We’ll have a special guest with us on Easter that will bring the series to a climax. His name is Brooks Douglass who produced and starred in a powerful movie called “Heaven’s Rain.” So begin now inviting your friends. We’ll have a great time together studying what the Bible says about the place the place we were made for. (more…)
