INTRODUCTION

ILLUSTRATION – The amazing story of Louis Zamperini is told by Laura Hillenbrand in the biography entitled Unbroken. As a boy Zamperini was a rascal who loved to solve his problems with his fists. Eventually his brother recognized that he had talent as a runner. He does excel at running and ends up representing the US at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. With WWII beginning Zamperini came home and enlisted in the US Army Air Force. He became a bombardier on a B-24 that was shot down over the Pacific Ocean. He and two of his fellow crew members drifted in a life raft in the ocean, barely clinging to life. One desperate day Zamperini, who was not a religious man, threw up a prayer to God that included a promise that he really didn’t intend to keep: “God if you will save me, I will serve you forever.” Forty-seven days later they were captured by the Japanese. Through it all Zamperini courageously met every challenge with a strength of will that made him, indeed, “unbroken.” For three years Zamperini was kept in a Japanese POW camp that was kept top-secret because of the horrible torture inflicted on its prisoners. INTRODUCTION

ILLUSTRATION – A few years ago Nan and I were driving through the mountains of Colorado when we began to see flashing signs along the interstate that there had been a rockslide across the highway at a certain point and that we should expect long delays. Fortunately we had rented a car that had OnStar, the navigation and communication system installed in many cars where you can get all kinds of directions and assistance. I thought, “Well I’ll just push this little button on the rearview mirror and instantly I will have a friendly attendant on the line who will skillfully guide me on an alternate route so I won’t have to stay stopped in traffic for hours. We’ll be on our way in no time.” Well, I pushed the OnStar button and immediately there was the voice of a friendly lady on the speaker. I explained our situation (she already knew our location) and asked if she could give us an alternate route to get to where we were going. There was a pause, and then she said, “I’m sorry sir. I’m afraid you’re stuck. There’s nowhere for you to get off that highway and there’s no place to turn around. You have no option but to sit and wait for the road to clear.” I paused and then asked, “Well, do you deliver pizza?” And you know the answer to that! (more…)

ILLUSTRATION – In the late 1800s a young man named Robert Jermain Thomas left his homeland of Wales with his young bride to set sail for China as a missionary. Soon God would move on his heart that the Gospel needed to be taken to the nation of Korea, a land that had for many years been closed to any outside influence, including missionaries. But Thomas felt that the Word of God would have an impact in that land. So he sailed on an American naval ship up a river to a port at the city of Pyongyang, now the capital of North Korea. He took a few Bibles to the shore to give to the people who had gathered there. But Robert Jermain Thomas would immediately be killed by soldiers before he was able to do any more. He was just 27 years old. The soldier who ordered Thomas’ execution took one of those Bibles to his home, ripped out the pages and used the paper as wallpaper to insulate his home. Later he sold his home to another Korean man who began to read the pages of the Bible that were plastered to the walls … and he was saved! Many years later, that house became a church, and that simple event was part of a great spiritual awakening that swept across Korea in the 1900s. There’s power in the Word of God. (more…)

INTRODUCTION

God is at work in your world. Do you truly believe that? I don’t want you to sit on the bank as the mighty river of God’s activity rolls by as you just watch from a comfortable distance. I want you to wade in and feel the tug of the current pulling you in the direction of what God is doing. God is on a great redemptive mission in this world. The world is broken because of sin and He sent His Son Jesus to save the world. And one day it will be complete when Christ will come again and make all things new. And that means that God is not just on a mission in your world; He’s on a mission in your life to rebuild your life into the image of His Son Jesus. So this great river is flowing. (more…)
