October 17, 2013 “Overcoming Obstacles”

Thursday, October 31st, 2013

ILLUSTRATION – I have some friends who have a very strange hobby. They like to run in races, but not just an ordinary race. It is called a “Mud Run.” It’s really an obstacle course. PHOTO 1 – It involves feats like running through muddy pits of water. PHOTO 2 – Crawling under barbed wire. PHOTO 3 – Running through fire. PHOTO 4 – Climbing over obstacles.

You know, anyone who takes seriously the challenge of rebuilding their broken world will find that it isn’t easy. Whether you’re trying to rebuild a broken life or a broken marriage … whether you feel called by God to move into some broken part of your world and help to rebuild it … there will be obstacles, pitfalls and setbacks. Count on it. My aim this morning is to encourage you from God’s word to persevere.

Let’s open our Bibles to Ezra 2. In these weeks were focusing on a part of the OT that may not be familiar to us. But Ezra contains an amazing story of some people whom God used to rebuild their broken world. Specifically they were called by God to rebuild their broken city of Jerusalem and the broken Temple within Jerusalem. For seventy years or so the Jews had been in exile in Babylon. But God was moving. In Ezra 1 we saw how God purposed that Jerusalem would once again be a shining light to the nations. He moved the heart of a Persian king named Cyrus to let the captives go free to rebuild their broken city. And God moved the hearts of the people to do it. (more…)

INTRODUCTION

This morning I’m beginning a new series entitled “Rebuilding Your Broken World.” The world in which we live is broken by sin. The world that is your life and my life is broken by all kinds of suffering and weakness. This morning I have a burden for those of you whose world is broken by illness … either your illness or the illness of a loved one. If that is your situation would you stand? I’d like to pray for you this morning as I begin.

Let’s open our Bibles together to the Old Testament book of Ezra. We’re going to spend the next few weeks learning from some of God’s people long ago about rebuilding our broken world. As you are turning I’ll just remind you that our new West Building is nearly finished. Sunday, November 3 is Harvest Day. We will have a special ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:40am. On that day we are also asking the church to come prepared to give an extra generous offering that will go toward our budget and for Lasting Legacy, our building program. Now let’s read Ezra 1:1-5.

Now just take the pages of your Bible in your fingers, starting with Ezra 1 and going into the next book Nehemiah 13. What happens over the span of these pages in your Bible is one of the greatest revivals in the history of God’s people. It looked like they were down and out … lost for good … and no longer good for anything. But God has plans to rebuild their broken world.
Specifically, what is broken is the city of Jerusalem and the Temple of Almighty God inside Jerusalem. For seventy years or so the city that was supposed to represent the Name of God, the Glory of God and the People of God as a witness to the nations was now in utter ruin … broken in just about every way you could imagine. INTRODUCTION

This morning when I left the house there was a layer of dew all across the city. You know the Bible says that the people of God are like the dew of heaven. And that was certainly true over the past few weeks climaxing with Love Fort Worth this weekend. The projects done by our church members were like a refreshing dew that settled over our city. And you know when the sun hits the dew it glistens, sparkles and shines. Jesus said, “Let others see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Let’s open our Bibles to John 13. It seems that every time they turned around the disciples heard Jesus talking about this … His urgent call to live on-mission lives … to engage the world with His love. Even in the last hours of Jesus’ life He drove home this truth to His followers. READ JOHN 13:1-5. Join me as we pray together. (more…)

How Will You be Remembered?

Friday, October 4th, 2013

The book of Acts records the untimely death of a woman named Dorcas who had distinguished herself among the disciples by her life of service.

“(Dorcas) was always doing good and helping the poor … All the widows stood around him (Peter), crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them” (Acts 9:36,39).

Standing there around Dorcas’ lifeless body were the people whom she had touched by her many acts of extraordinary kindness.  They held in their hands the tangible evidence of a life lived in practical service to others.  Dorcas was missed and remembered for the special things she did to help others feel the love of God in their lives. INTRODUCTION

We’ve been hearing from the words of our Savior the urgent call to engage in on-mission living, and next weekend we’ll put it into practice as we spread out all over the city to be salt and light. Then next Sunday we will all gather in one worship service at 11:00am to celebrate the opportunities the Lord has given us to engage. Some of those projects have already taken place, but most of them will happen in the coming week, so please pray for God to empower us for effective service.

I’ll ask you also to pray for a group of 175 pastors who will gather here in the Metroplex tomorrow and Tuesday for a time of fervent prayer that God would move in our churches in such a way as to spark a revival and spiritual awakening in our land. We desperately need this, and as the Lord brings it to your mind please pray.

In many ways we’re in the same predicament as Jesus’ disciples just after the resurrection of Jesus. We read about it Luke 24:36-49. Turn there please. Just after His resurrection Jesus appeared to His disciples to deal with the issue of their lack of power. Read text. (more…)
