Nan and I will never forget the events of April 10, 1979. We had just celebrated our second wedding anniversary.  At the time I was a student at Southwestern Seminary, and also served as the pastor of the Hillcrest Baptist Church in Wichita Falls, Texas.  The morning of April 10 two seminary buddies and I piled into a car to make the two-hour commute to Fort Worth for classes.  We had no idea the dramatic changes that awaited us that day. We’re taught from our earliest years to say “please” and “thank you.” I’m reminded of this as I watch our two grandchildren grow through the various stages of social interaction. Their parents are teaching them to say “please” when they ask for something. And when they receive something, they are to say “thank you.” It’s good manners. (more…)

Veterans Day was last Thursday.  We honor men and women who wore and who wear the uniform of one of the branches of our military.  They are familiar with battle.  I wonder if we understand that we are all veterans of spiritual warfare.  We may not realize it, but we are in the battle.  And that’s what Peter has in mind as he writes I Peter 5:8-9.  (more…)

    Dr. Michael Dean has been the senior pastor at Travis Avenue Baptist Church since 1991, having also served churches elsewhere in Texas and New Mexico. He and his wife Nan are blessed with two married children and three grandchildren. With a keen sense of calling to shepherd the flock of God entrusted to his care, Michael longs to see people become passionate followers of Jesus Christ. His hobbies include long-distance running, golf and hunting.
